Been hearing of this place for a while and finally got to go this month. The villa houses some of the earliest mosaics in the world, dating between the 1st and 3rd century AD during Alexandria's early Roman period. Located in the site of Kom El Dikka, on the east side of the town, behind the Bibliotheca Alexandrina, the villa's mosaic floors houses some of the few figural mosaics of the Roman era. In 1998, the American Research Center in Egypt - in collaboration with the U.S. Agency for International Development, the Polish-Egyptian Preservation Mission, the Polish Center of Archaeology and Egypt’s Supreme Council of Antiquities - began work to conserve the mosaics in the Villa of the Birds.
